Protect yourself financially

The two most popular ways for business owners to protect themselves against financial liability is through business insurance and by forming a LLC or S-Corp. It is highly recommended that you enroll in both.

Landscaping Business Insurance

You might be "broke" during the startup phase of your business, but not having business insurance can bankrupt you! There are several types of insurance that are highly recommended (depending on your state, some are required by law) for the landscaping and lawn care business professional.

Accident Insurance: Back pain, neck pain, sprained ankles, cuts, and fractures can accidentally happen on the job. Having proper accident insurance can cover many of the expenses associated with treatment and recovery.

Business Car Insurance: Using any vehicle for business purposes requires business insurance. Regular vehicle insurance does not cover business use.

Disability Insurance: The proper disability insurance plan will replace all or part of your personal business income if you are unable to work if you become disabled.

Liability Insurance: Property damage happens and it might not be your fault but the client might ask you to pay for damages. Also, many commercial accounts will not consider your bid unless you have a minimum coverage of $2 million dollars.

LLC or S-Corporation

Speak with your lawyer or accountant about forming a S-Corporation or Limited Liability Company. They can quickly file the forms necessary to form a new business entity on your behalf. Depending on state and federal laws, a Limited Liability Company or S-Corporation can protect the owners from some or all liability for acts and debts.

Many people agree that the least expensive way to form an LLC or S-Corp is to buy the forms online, complete the forms on your computer, and have a lawyer read over the paperwork to make sure they have been accurately completed.
